CIA Afghanistan Role Expanding

Oct 23, 2017

The CIA is ramping up efforts to “hunt and kill high level Taliban operatives.” The Trump administration loosened the restrictions on the CIA’s operations in Afghanistan. The CIA’s ground missions will include CIA paramilitary personnel and “special operations forces detailed to the agency for specific missions.” The goal of the Trump administration is to push the Taliban to the negotiating table with the Afghan government. Currently the Taliban “controls more territory than at any time since the U.S. invasion in 2001.” 3,000 additional troops have gone to Afghanistan. The U.S. is attempting to demoralize the Taliban by increasing the number of bombs being dropped. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said to the Taliban, “We’ll be here as long as it takes until you change your mind. You will not win a battlefield victory. We may not win one, but neither will you.”
