Independent Senators To Run Again As Independents

Oct 23, 2017

Senator Bernie Sanders plans to run for re-election in Vermont. He plans to run as an independent even though he ran as a Democrat in the presidential primary in 2016 and despite efforts by the Democratic Party to require him to join the party. In an interview with Fox News, Sanders said, “I am an independent and I have always run in Vermont as an independent, while I caucus with the Democrats in the United States Senate. That’s what I’ve been doing for a long time and that’s what I’ll continue to do.” Recently a member of the Democratic National Committee introduced a resolution to require independents Bernie Sanders and Angus King to “run as Democrats in the future.” The resolution failed to get a simple majority. Angus King said that he plans to run as an independent in 2018 as well. “I’ve been an independent since the early nineties. I was a governor as an independent. That’s who I am."
