Spain Asks for Clarification on Independence

Oct 12, 2017

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy asked the president of Spains Catalan region to clarify whether or not he had actually declared independence from the rest of Spain. The Catalan president appeared to have declared independence from Spain and then suspended it and called for further dialogue with Spain’s government. Rajoy said that Catalonia’s leader had created “deliberate confusion” with his comments and actions on Tuesday. Not waiting for a response, Rajoy invoked Article 155 of Spain’s Constitution. The article “would allow Madrid to suspend Catalan lawmakers and take charge of the region’s autonomous administration.” “It is urgent to put an end to the situation that Catalonia is living. The government wants to offer certainties to Spaniards and Catalans,” said Rajoy. While Rajoy is under pressure to stop the Catalan secession, Rajoy has a history of caution and may let the Catalan leader dig his own hole. “[S]trong reprisals against the region’s leader . . . could galvanized the independence movement.”
