California Democrats Look For Primary Challenger

California Representative Ro Khanna is urging Democrats to primary Dianne Feinstein. Feinstein announced on Monday that she would seek a fifth term in the Senate. Khanna recognized Feinstein’s “lifetime of public service,” but indicated that she is not sufficiently progressive on issues of privacy and single payer healthcare. Neither has “She . . . been a strong advocate on privacy, she hasn’t been strong on civil liberties, she hasn’t been strong in terms of standing up to our foreign policy interventions around the world.” The congressman has urged Representative Barbara Lee to run as well as former Labor Secretary Robert Reich to run. At 84, Feinstein is the longest serving Democrat in the Senate. In a recent poll, less than half of registered voters thought Feinstein should run for a fifth term. Feinstein said, “I’m ready for a good fight. I’ve got things to fight for. I’m in a position where I can be effective, and hopefully, that means something to California.”
