Did Corker Decide Not To Run Because of FBI Investigation?

Oct 10, 2017

Tennessee Republican Senator Bob Corker will not stand for re-election in 2018. One compelling factor in his decision may be due to an FBI investigation into several business enterprises where he stood to personally profit. The FBI reportedly is investigating Senator Corker’s “dozens of lucrative stock trades over a period of several years, collectively worth tens of millions of dollars.” As chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has received non-public information about the economic issues in many countries. In a span of 3 months in 2014 he invested in 29 companies, made 92 trades that were worth $945,000. Federal investigators are looking into whether the trades were based on insider information. Corker raised suspicions in 2015 when the Wall Street Journal reported on ten years worth of contradictions and omissions in Corker’s personal financial disclosures. Corker later amended his disclosures. But they “revealed millions of dollars in previously undeclared assets.” Senator Corker’s political career is dotted with examples of using “public office for his own personal benefit.”
