NY Times “Conservative” Calls For Abolishing Second Amendment

The New York Times’ token conservative columnist published a piece called for the repeal of the Second Amendment. Bret Stephens wrote, “I have never understood the conservative fetish for the Second Amendment.” He goes on to explain that “more guns means more murder,” “more guns means less safety.” Stephens calls on liberals and moderates to stop waiting for the courts to restrict gun rights. Instead he encourages them to overturn the Second Amendment. “Expansive interpretations of the right to bear arms will be the law of the land — until the ‘right’ itself ceases to be.” Several conservative writers took issue with Stephen’s column. David Harsanyi writes that the claim that “more guns means more crime” actually “ignores the vast evidence that the number of guns does not correlate with the murder or the crime rates.” “[T]here is no way to quantify how many criminals are deterred by the presence of guns, or how many, for that matter, are turned away in the midst of crime. Has anyone calculated how many non-gun-owning families are safer because their neighbors own firearms?”
