The inspector general of the Treasury Department said that it is investigating allegations that the Treasury’s “intelligence division has been illegally looking at private financial records of U.S. citizens.” Officials at the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network have been warning Congress and other federal officials that “private banking and financial information belonging to U.S. citizens has been searched and stored illegally.” An unnamed Treasury official called the actions “domestic spying.” A spokesman for the Treasury officially denied the report. “An unsourced suggestion that an office with Treasury is engaged in illegal spying on Americans is unfounded and completely off-base.” The alleged spying took place during the Obama administration.
