March Towards Dictatorship

Aug 10, 2017

Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro’s Constitutional Assembly decreed itself superior to all other government institutions on Tuesday. Opposition lawmakers are expressly forbidden from challenging any new laws passed by the Constitutional Assembly. Opposition leader Luisa Ortega Diaz was removed from her post as Attorney General on Saturday. On Tuesday, Supreme Court judges convicted the oppositions mayor of a Caracas-area town. He was convicted of not suppressing protestors. Early in August, two of the country’s most visible opposition leaders were taken from their homes where they’d lived under house arrest for a number of years. Maduro’s consolidation of power means economic conditions for Venezuela’s people will get a lot worse.
