Democrats Push Government Shutdown

Aug 10, 2017

Democrats in Congress insist that the president give up on building a wall on America’s border with Mexico. If not, Democrats are vowing to shutter the government. The White House wants a down payment on construction of the wall in the fiscal 2018 budget. So, White House officials are looking for ways to compromise with Democrats. A plan to increase domestic spending is being discussed. Now that any movement on the repeal of Obamacare is dead for the time being, the White House has identified border wall funding as an important win. The White House is not waiting for last minute gamesmanship. It is trying to hammer out an agreement while there is significant time left in the current fiscal year. If Democrats can force the president to give up on constructing the border wall, they will then gleefully point out that he broke one of his major campaign promises.
