Government Screw-Up Causes Innocent Man to Lose Guns

Aug 10, 2017

A New York man had his guns confiscated because of a screw-up that labeled him as mentally ill. The 70-year old Don Hall lost four long guns and two handguns. Nobody was able to tell him what he had supposedly done wrong or how to correct it. “I was guilty until I could prove myself innocent,” said Hall. On the advice of his attorney, Hall began contacting hospitals asking them to certify that he had not been treated for mental health conditions. One hospital had a record of someone with the same name but a slightly different Social Security number. Hall and his attorney were able to convince a county judge that it was a case of mistaken identity. The judge ordered that Hall’s guns be returned to him. He had to spend a lot of time and money to defend his innocence. None of the entities or hospitals have offered to reimburse him for the cost of proving his innocence.
