Italy Considers Nuclear Option

Jul 17, 2017

Italy has received such little assistance in dealing with the influx of migrants that it is threatening to use the nuclear option. This would mean granting visas to 200,000 migrants who would then have unrestricted access to all of northern Europe. “Letting migrants travel once they reach Italy would create a real problem for our EU neighbors. But I hope it would force France to confront the migrant problem head on,” Deputy Foreign Minister Mario Giro said. In 2015, the EU said that it would distribute 160,000 African and Middle Eastern migrants from Ital. But only 6,896 have been accepted into Northern European countries. To take some of the burden off Italy, the EU is planning to transport migrants to Europe directly from North Africa.
