Citizenship Battle in Italy

Jul 17, 2017

Soil Born Citizenship is at the heart of big debate in Italy. Should the children of migrants who are born on Italian soil have automatic citizenship rights? Currently, children born of at least one Italian parent have that right. Pending legislation in the Italian parliament to grant citizenship to children born on Italian soil has resulted in fisticuffs in the legislative body. The massive influx of migrants into Italy has intensified the debate. In a recent poll, public support for the legislation dropped to 32.3 percent. Adoption of the legislation would confer citizenship to 800,000 children immediately.
