US will Commission its Newest Aircraft Carrier

Jul 12, 2017

The United States will be commissioning its latest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford on Saturday. The Navy will now have 11 carriers. The USS Gerald R. Ford is the newest class of carrier in 40 years. It is the most advanced carrier in the Navy’s fleet. Aircraft on the ship will now be tracked digitally instead of manually. The ships catapults are electromagnetic powered instead of steam powered. The ship can generate 13,800 volts of electricity versus 4,160 volts in other carriers. Instead of having 100 hot water heaters, the new carrier has 16. Living space for sailors has increased substantially. The improvements mean that the ship needs 600 fewer sailors to run it.
