500 people working for the Department of Veterans Affairs have lost their jobs since President Trump took office in January. The scandal plagued VA is actively demoting, removing, firing, and suspending employees. In June, Congress passed legislation to make “it easier to [the VA] to fire employees for misconduct while better protecting staffers who bring wrongdoing to light.” Secretary David Shulkin has begun publicly sharing weekly updates on “adverse employee actions.” Shulkin said, “Veterans and taxpayers have a right to know what we’re doing to hold our employees accountable and make our personnel actions transparent. Posting this information online for all to see, and updating it weekly, will do just that.” If all Senators and Representatives had to get their healthcare from the VA, reformation within the bureaucracy might happen even faster.
