Democrats Slow Judiciary Nominees

Jul 10, 2017

Republicans may have to become more aggressive in getting President Trump’s federal judiciary nominees hearings and votes. Democrat Senators say that the White House has not done enough to consult with them on choosing judicial nominees. White House officials say they have reached out to Democratic senators, but that the senators “frequently fail to return our calls, don’t respond to our inquiries and otherwise avoid our constant overtures.” By custom, senators can effectively veto a nominee from their home state who does not meet their approval by refusing to return a blue slip to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republican leadership may have to alter the custom and proceed with hearings and votes.
