Robert Mueller, former Director of the FBI, has been appointed special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. The investigation into Russian influence may be wrapped up quickly. Mueller is known to be a quick study. While it is doubtful that there are any Russian connections to the Trump campaign, for at least the next campaign cycle Democrats in Congress will raise million in campaign donations off of the investigation. More alarming is that Special Counsels tend to take on a life of their own. Robert Mueller is authorized to investigate “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation” and is “authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation….” It’s the cases that arise from investigation that may take years to prosecute. And given President Trump’s poor handling of the attacks that have been directed towards him, he may provide enough curve balls to keep the investigation alive.
