Campaign Promise

May 16, 2017

During the presidential campaign, candidate Trump promised the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that the US “will move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem.” Now President Trump appears to be re-thinking his promise. Secretary of State Tillerson said that Trump "wants to put a lot of effort into seeing if we cannot advance a peace initiative

between Israel and Palestine...the President is being very careful to understand how such a decision [moving the embassy] would impact a peace process." Trump’s hesitation has infuriated one of his biggest supporters, pro-Israel billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Adelson’s newspaper, The Las Vegas Review-Journal, was the only major paper to endorse Trump. Adelson gave $5 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. Axios reports, “the Las Vegas billionaire doesn’t buy the argument that the embassy move should be contingent on the peace process.”
