In an ironic twist, the Democratic National Committee which was the champion of the $15.00 per hour minimum wage in the recent Presidential campaign is defending a class action suit by former employees. The suit claims that some workers were forced to put in 80-90 hours per week for a flat salary of $3,000 per month which means they were barely paid above the minimum wage for the first forty hours each week, and received no overtime pay as required by law for the hours worked over the forty per week limit.
The DNC claimed it could not afford overtime pay despite the millions raised during the campaign. The DNC stands by the provision in its 2016 party platform that calls on private companies to be required to pay $15.00 per hour minimum wage. However, Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren wants the minimum wage to be $22.00 per hour. Of course, apparently none of that will apply to the DNC.
