Louis Marinelli, the leader of the “Yes California Independence Campaign” reached out to Russia and China as members of the UN Security Council to see if he could gain recognition for an independent California in case Washington refused to let it happen. But backers of Yes California were put off by what the media now claimed were “ties to Russia,” akin to the false claim that Russia had interfered in the US election. That was enough to taint the movement and kill it. Without financial support the movement failed and Martinelli decided to go into retreat in Russia. In a letter to supporters on Monday, Martinelli referred to the Golden State as “occupied California” and said, “I have found in Russia a new happiness, a life without the albatross of frustration and resentment towards one’s homeland, and a future detached from the partisan divisions and animosity that has thus far engulfed my entire adult life.” Because of Martinelli’s decision to seek a haven in Russia, his movement has been totally discredited. Sadly, he won’t find any more freedom there than in Kalifornia.
