South Korea Building its own Missile Defense System

Apr 18, 2017

Even though the US has imported its THAAD high altitude missile defense system into Korea, South Korea is intent on fielding a low-altitude M-SAM missile defense system, which is expected to better handle North Korea’s short range rocket threat within 15 miles, according to Sputnik News.

Another element of the Korean plans is the L-SAM, a long-range surface-to-air missile, which is capable of destroying enemy missiles at altitudes of 40-60 kilometers. But neither system will come on line until about 2019, which may be too late, given the current level of hostilities.
