Like a kid with a powerful new toy, Donald Trump seemed very pleased with his latest show of power against ISIS in Afghanistan. He said he was "very, very proud" of the military's "successful job."
US aircraft had dropped the 22 thousand pound GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, also known as the "Mother of All Bombs" or "MOAB" on a remote tunnel complex in northeast Afghanistan. It was a strange mission from a military point of view since. It’s the second biggest nonnuclear bomb in the US military's inventory, but it isn’t designed to penetrate deep targets like tunnels. It has to be delivered by a C130 transport aircraft.
At best, it might produce a blast wave that damages ears, but it isn’t capable of destroying the tunnel complex. It might simply have been a case of the military wanting to test this new weapon on a real target, or it may have been an expensive retaliation for the death Saturday of Army Special Forces soldier who was killed fighting in the same area. In any case the 16 million bomb was one very expensive show of force, even if true that it destroyed a small ISIS base with 36 combatants as the Pentagon claims.
