Although Russia has given the US a stern warning about further US strikes in Syria, which it is preparing to defend against, Defense Secretary Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon, “It will not spiral out of control." He added that, "I'm confident the Russians will act in their own best interest and there is nothing in their best interest to say they want this situation to go out of control."
Mattis also admitted that Trump had only authorized one attack, and that there was no authority to do anything further including ousting Assad. The reporters asked him about “mission creep” as happened in Vietnam, but Mattis downplayed that. The primary mission of the United States is to defeat Isis, not to become entangled in Syria’s civil war. In reality, it isn’t a civil war since most of the rebels are imported, paid for, and armed by the US and other surrogate countries.
